This story is one in a series that follows the progression of my latest PCS. In an effort to show the complexity, frustrations and joys of PCS’ing, I’m baring all in this series to help other military spouses (even if it’s just one!) take on their next PCS with confidence. This is the thirty-second installment of an ongoing saga — to get caught up, click here.

It’s details time! With only two weeks left until you pack out and move, it’s time to buckle down and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

As you prepare to move out, make sure to keep your files and paperwork organized and in one location. Whether that’s a pile of folders in the front seat of your car or a file folder packed in your bag, just make sure your important documents and PCS-related paperwork is all in order.

Okay, now it’s time to get to the lists!

Military Spouse List

__Return items you have borrowed, collect things you have loaned.

__Clean your house (or have it cleaned) in preparation for your move-out inspection.

__Make sure your pet’s medical records are up-to-date and take them to get any additional shots or certificates they may require.

__Double check which pieces of luggage you plan to bring and pack the items you plan to keep with you during your move.

__Service your cars before your road trip, if you’re driving to your next duty station.

__Empty your safety deposit box, if you have one.

__Complete your change of address form with the post office if you haven’t already. If you still don’t know your new address, you can have a hold put on your mail.

__Pay outstanding bills.

__Drain oil and gas from your lawn mower and other power equipment. Consider selling what you don’t plan to use at your next duty station.

__Double check your family record file and be sure to include:
a. Copies of orders
b. Emergency contact information (of someone outside of you and your spouse)
c. Duplicates of car, luggage and other important keys
d. Home inventory of your household goods
e. Receipts of any expenses you’ve already incurred leading up to this PCS.

__Properly dispose of all hazardous or flammable liquids.

__Make plans for a pet sitter or child care on moving day.

Service Member List

__Verify final schedule with TMO.

__Pick up uniforms from the cleaners.

__Buy additional uniforms or rank, if needed.

__Make hotel reservations and/or car rental arrangements, if necessary.

__Call your sponsor to verify check-in procedures and point of contact at your gaining unit.

That should cover the two-week to-do list! As you can see, there’s still plenty left to do even though there are only two weeks left until you pack out and move out! Remember to follow this list and take a deep breath. Everything else will fall into place!
